Celebrating our parents

Parents play an important role in our lives – not only are they our caregivers for those first crucial decades of our lives, but they provide us with unconditional support, guidance and love.

Throughout our upbringing, parents enrich us with the foundations needed throughout life that shape us into individuals.

The value of parents and parenthood is celebrated worldwide on 1 June for Global Day of Parents.

To mark Global Day of Parents we look at some ways to celebrate our parents and to acknowledge all that they do for us!

1. Hold a gathering

Invite the family together for a meal and cook a family favourite, share stories, look over family albums, and perhaps learn more about your family history and share a reason (or many) for why you are thankful for your parents.

2. Take a family walk

Taking a walk together out in nature is not only to a nice way to spend time together, it is also great for your mental health! Allocate some time, choose a track and enjoy some time together out in the fresh air!

3. Gift them with a card

A card with a message is a nice gift for a parent to receive no matter the age! Often we forget to express our gratitude for our parents face to face and by writing it down on a card, it is not only a nice way to share your gratitude, but it also provides a keepsake for your parents to read and reflect on for years to come.

4. Hold a house cleaning party

Parents clean and do chores around the house on a daily basis! Why not hold a house cleaning party, turn on a favourite playlist and distribute tasks amongst all family members! This provides a chance to share the cleaning around, teach lifelong skills for the kids, have some fun and spend time together.

5. Include them

Including our parents in activities or occasions that may seem minutiae in our busy everyday lives, could be special for them. Such as inviting a grandparent to watch a grandchild sports match or to attend a family dinner. By including our parents, it shows that they are appreciated and that you value their company.

A parent’s role is endless; parents are who we entrust and who continue to provide guidance to children no matter the age.

Sharing our gratitude to our parents for all that they have done and continue to do for us is important and is something we can do every day, not just once a year on Global Day of Parents!
