CatholicCare Victoria

Join us for our Regional Parenting Roadshow 2022

Families living in regional Victoria often have limited or reduced access to services due to their remote locality. But for the CatholicCare Victoria Parenting team in Bendigo, distance is no deterrent.

For the past nine years, our Bendigo Parenting team have run the Regional Parenting Mallee Roadshow to deliver free parenting workshops in regional towns across north-west Victoria.

This year, starting from Tuesday 14 June, our Parenting team will offer free workshops in Ouyen, Mildura and Swan Hill. The team consists of two CatholicCare Victoria Family Relationship Practitioners - Lisa Castles and Julia Feiss.

“We’re excited to be providing these workshops for parents and meet with our local communities to help strengthen family relationships, and build capacity for parents,” says Julia Feiss.

Our Parenting team’s first stop is in Ouyen, where proactive parents will engage in the Kids and Worry workshop hosted at the Ouyen Kindergarten.

This workshop will explore the reasons why children worry, and ways parents can support them. It will include ideas as well as practical tools to assist children to manage their worries.

Day two will bring the team to Mildura where they will deliver two workshops. The first is Kids and Anger. This workshop will explore why children get angry, help parents understand their own response to their child’s anger, and give strategies to help in assisting children to appropriately express anger.

The second Mildura workshop is The Importance of Dads, which will focus on the important role dads play in the growth and development of their children. Looking at the benefits of play, the workshop will discuss how dads can maximise their child’s social, emotional, and academic growth.

These two sessions will be coordinated in partnership with the Mildura Family and Child Hub, which is run by Sunraysia Community Health Services.

Heading south again, day three will take place in Swan Hill, at the Swan Hill North Primary School. The Connecting with Kids workshop equips parents with techniques to help them use their emotional intelligence to teach their children about managing their feelings. Past participants have said that they found the ‘Emotion Coaching’ to be a particular highlight, helping them to acknowledge their own emotions more, as well as their child’s.

Parents also said that they gained more insight into emotional regulation and methods to assist their children, and the importance of being ‘reflective before reactive’ when supporting children and their feelings.
