CatholicCare Victoria

Vale Fr Gerard Dowling

It is with deep sorrow that we share the passing of a beloved figure, Father Gerard Dowling, OAM.

With a heavy heart, we reflect on the immeasurable loss of a man who has been a cornerstone of CatholicCare Victoria for an incredible 60 years and of broadcasting in Melbourne for an astounding 50 years, leaving an indelible mark on our community throughout his remarkable career.

Joining CatholicCare (known as the Catholic Family Welfare Bureau) as a Counsellor in 1963, and then serving as CatholicCare’s Spiritual Director, he provided unwavering assistance to both CatholicCare Victoria and the broader community.

His weekly radio program on 3UZ, "The Family Counsellor," has been a constant presence since 1973, making it the longest-running program of its kind in Australian radio.

Throughout his tenure, Father Dowling's impact extended far beyond the airwaves. At a time before phone counselling services and support lines, his program gave people permission to talk about their problems.

Credited with saving lives and offering solace to thousands, he embodied compassion and commitment, leaving an enduring legacy of support.

In 1985 he received the Medal of the Order of Australia for services to the community. In recognition of Father Dowling's exemplary dedication, we established the Fr Dowling Award, honouring our staff who mirror his mission and values.

Last year, we were proud to present Father Dowling with an honorary Norma Parker Award, underscoring our deep appreciation for his lifelong commitment to community support.

In recent weeks, Father Dowling displayed signs of slowing down, reminding us of the finite nature of life. To the family of Father Gerard Dowling, we extend our deepest condolences.

His presence enriched our lives, and his memory will forever resonate within our hearts.

May he rest in peace.

At Fr Dowling's eulogy, the Beatles song 'Let It Be' was shared for it's meaningful lyrics:

When I find myself in times of trouble, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be
And in my hour of darkness she is standing right in front of me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And when the broken hearted people living in the world agree
There will be an answer, let it be
For though they may be parted, there is still a chance that they will see
There will be an answer, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
There will be an answer, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

Let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be, be

And when the night is cloudy there is still a light that shines on me
Shinin' until tomorrow, let it be
I wake up to the sound of music, Mother Mary comes to me
Speaking words of wisdom, let it be

And let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be

And let it be, let it be, let it be, let it be
Whisper words of wisdom, let it be
