“It was the worst night of my life, I was suicidal. When you are suffering that badly you are very alone and everyone has got problems so, you don’t want to burden other people with yours.”
Sarah*, CatholicCare counselling client
In Victoria, 1 in 5 people will experience a mental health issue in any one year, and we know that the number of people seeking assistance is continuing to grow throughout Australia.
Now more than ever, vulnerable individuals and families need to have access to affordable and quality mental health care.
Your gift this Christmas will mean we can continue to offer subsidised counselling sessions with qualified counsellors for our most vulnerable clients.
“My marriage was in crisis, we’d been struggling quite badly financially and we had a lot of pressures on us.” Sarah says.
“My daughter was going through a very tumultuous time and my youngest son was struggling with severe anxiety, I also hadn’t been sleeping, it was… things were really bad.”
Then one night, everything came to a head for Sarah. The pressures and worries she was facing became overwhelming, and Sarah knew she needed to reach out for help to save her marriage and her life.
”It was the worst night of my life, I was suicidal. When you are suffering that badly you are very alone and everyone has got problems so, you don’t want to burden other people with yours.”
That’s when Sarah remembered the notice she had seen about counselling services.
“I just remember seeing the CatholicCare ad in our little parish bulletin, it had the phone number…so I rang and we got in the next day”
“Coming to counselling… I never knew how good it was going to be and that it would save my life… and it really has. I drive here every week because it’s my lifeline.” Sarah says.
Counselling can improve quality of life, reduce stress, help strengthen and rebuild relationships with others and help families and children take control of their future. For Sarah, attending counselling sessions has been a life-changing experience.
With your help, people just like Sarah can find the support they need for their mental health at CatholicCare.
