Adoption & Permanent Care

CatholicCare’s Adoption and Permanent Care Team sensitively deal with both adoption and permanent care matters acknowledging and respecting the wishes of birth parents and ensuring that they have appropriate advice and support, while also recruiting, screening, training and supporting skilled carers and prospective adoptive parents.

Our goal in relinquishment cases is to encourage and support birth parents explore the viability of caring for their infant. If they are unable to care for their infant, we offer them information to enable them to understand the adoption process and to ensure they are aware of their rights as parents in being involved in the decision making for their child’s future.
All adoptions have the capacity to be "open" with CatholicCare acting as the contact between family members who agree to meet or exchange information.

Adoption Information Service

Our Adoption Information Service provides information, counselling, records release, search, outreach and reunification services to people enquiring about past adoptions managed by CatholicCare (or our predecessor agencies Centacare Catholic Family Services or Catholic Family Welfare Bureau).

Permanent Care

Permanent care is an option for birth parents to consider if they are unable to care for their child and other options available such as extended family are not viable.

Protecting the best interests of the children!

Our statewide program provides:

  • Information sessions and compulsory education and training for people considering becoming adoptive parents and permanent carers
  • Counselling, support and outreach services to families seeking to adopt an infant
  • Pre and post legal support for families going through the adoption process
  • Placement for vulnerable children up to 12 years in stable and supportive families environments eliminating their risk or experience of abuse and/or neglect
  • Information, counselling, records release, search, outreach and reunification services to people enquiring about past adoptions: for adopted adults, birth parents, natural relatives, under-age adoptees and other adoptees
All matters relating to our service are handled confidentially and in accordance with privacy legislation.
