CatholicCare's Adoption and Permanent Care Unit handles matters surrounding adoption and permanent care with sensitivity, understanding and respect for all involved. Our goal is to assist single mothers and couples, as much as possible, to care for their child as the first option. If for some reason the birth parents are not able, due to circumstances that would cause long-term separation, then adoption or permanent care can be arranged.

The following services are available:

  • an information service about previous adoptions, including counselling for the adoptee and parents
  • advice and arrangement of permanent care, healthy infant and special needs adoptions.

It must be noted that all adoptions have the ability to be "open", with CatholicCare acting as the contact between family members who agree to meet or exchange information. All matters relating to our services are handled confidentially and in accordance with privacy legislation.

'Along came Polly, and three lives were transformed'

The Age ran a feature in its ‘12 Days: The Gift of Love’ series exploring the rewards of caring for children with special needs. The article entitled ‘Along Came Polly, and Three Lives Were Transformed’ (30/12/08) profiled Kaye and Gary’s family. Kaye and Gary approached our Adoptions and Permanent Care Program six years ago and became permanent carers of ‘Polly’ who was four years of age and diagnosed with an intellectual disability, mild cerebral palsy and epilepsy. It took a year for Kaye and Gary to teach Polly to talk and now she receives wonderful reports from her special school. Kaye and Gary approached the Adoptions and Permanent Care Program again and were asked if they would like another child with special needs as they had made such remarkable progress with Polly. They were matched with ‘Mark’ who was then nine months of age. Kaye says parenting children with special needs is “rewarding, you get so much love”.
